Our Foundation

Built on the groundbreaking research of developmental psychology pioneers who shaped early childhood education

Lev Vygotsky's Social Learning Theory

Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934) revolutionized our understanding of how children learn. His research showed that children develop best through social interaction and collaboration with caring adults and peers.

Zone of Proximal Development

Vygotsky's most famous concept describes the sweet spot between what a child can do alone and what they can do with help. This is where real learning happens!

"What a child can do in cooperation today, he can do alone tomorrow." - Vygotsky (1978)

Social Interaction

Learning happens through meaningful relationships. Our teachers guide children through collaborative play and exploration.

Language Development

Vygotsky showed that language is the tool of thought. We create rich language experiences throughout every day.

Guided Support

Our teachers provide just the right amount of support to help each child reach their next level of development.

Urie Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems

Urie Bronfenbrenner (1917-2005) was not only a brilliant developmental psychologist but also a co-founder of Head Start in 1965. His Ecological Systems Theory shows how children develop within interconnected systems of relationships.

Head Start Co-Founder

Bronfenbrenner helped design Head Start based on his research showing that supporting the whole family system leads to better outcomes for children.

"In order to develop normally, a child requires...one or more adults who have an irrational emotional relationship with the child. Somebody's got to be crazy about that kid." - Bronfenbrenner (1979)

Family Systems (Microsystem)

Your family relationships are the most important influence on your child's development. We strengthen these bonds.

Home-School Connection (Mesosystem)

Strong partnerships between families and school create the best environment for children to thrive.

Community Support (Exosystem)

We connect families to community resources and support systems that benefit the whole family.

How These Theories Guide Our Practice Today

Vygotsky in Action

Our teachers work alongside children, providing scaffolded support that helps them reach new learning milestones through social interaction and play.

Bronfenbrenner in Action

We support your whole family system with resources, parent education, and community connections because we know this creates the best outcomes for children.

Whole Child Development: Our Integrated Approach

Drawing from Vygotsky and Bronfenbrenner's research, we understand that children develop across multiple interconnected domains. Our program nurtures every aspect of your child's growth through intentional, research-based practices.

Cognitive Development

Through Vygotsky's scaffolded learning, we build thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and academic readiness through meaningful play and exploration.

Social Development

Children learn cooperation, friendship skills, and cultural awareness through diverse group experiences and community connections.

Emotional Development

We nurture emotional intelligence, self-regulation, and confidence through responsive relationships and safe, supportive environments.

Physical Development

Active play, nutrition education, and health services support healthy bodies and minds, creating the foundation for all learning.

A Message from Our Director

Kristina Flores

M.Ed. Early Childhood Education โ€ข Head Start Director

"When I decided to establish our Head Start program, I was driven by a profound belief that every child deserves the very best beginning in life, regardless of their family's circumstances or background.

As an educator with over 15 years of experience in early childhood development, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of quality early learning experiences. I chose to create a Head Start program because I understand that the early yearsโ€”from birth to age fiveโ€”are when 90% of a child's brain development occurs. This is our window of opportunity to make a lasting difference.

What sets Head Start apart is our comprehensive approach. We don't just prepare children academically for school; we nurture their social-emotional growth, support their physical health and nutrition, and strengthen their entire family system. When Bronfenbrenner talked about the ecological systems that shape a child's development, he understood what we practice every day: children thrive when their whole world is supported.

I established this program because early learners need more than just childcareโ€”they need advocates, champions, and a community that believes in their potential. They need teachers who understand that every interaction is a learning opportunity, families who feel empowered as their child's first teacher, and a support system that addresses barriers to success.

Head Start works because it meets children and families exactly where they are and provides the tools, resources, and relationships they need to flourish. Every day, I'm reminded why I chose this pathโ€”because when we invest in our youngest learners, we invest in our community's future.

"
